But the most irritating one of those is 'looking for graphics driver' Apart from not being able to use compiz ( who does not like a bit of desktop effects??) I am not being able to dim the backlit display. Perhaps the inability of youtube videos ( or any other streaming of flash content) is also a direct consequence of absence of a proper graphics driver.
The video and audio works fine when I play it on vlc or banshee, but trying to stream content from web creates problem: there is no sound. And the video plays at 5x the normal speed. Solutions I tried: I installed the proprietary driver that is made available by ATI. Hte flgrx thing. And it completely screwed up my system. On openSUSE / Mandriva / Ubuntu the display would become jerky after installing the driver.
Even scrolling lines on a terminal would feel like working on a PC with 32 KB of RAM. On Fedora 12 the display went out. X server refused to start untill I somehow un-installed the driver. Any distribution from the last few months (Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 10.04 come to mind) should provide 2D and 3D acceleration out-of-the-box (or, in the case of F12, after installing one extra package) using the open source radeon driver. I doubt very much that the video driver is creating the problem with video running at 5x and audio not working at all.
As for fglrx. It should work on opensuse, mandriva, and Ubuntu. F12 pay be more difficult, but I believe it's now working. If it's not working for you, we'd really need to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated to figure out what's going on.

As I have already stated. Installing flgrx on linux had caused my system to crash.
And installing them on openSUSE etc earlier had caused the display to become jerky ( making the computer appear to be slow). And as I said, we would need to see the log file from when you used fglrx to find out what was wrong.
